In 2019, Selous Game Reserve became the 20th and largest National Park of Tanzania adopting the name of Nyerere National Park, in honor of Tanzania’s first President.
This park is a bastion of wilderness, offering walking safaris, safari game drives, boat safaris and night safaris.
Defined by the Rufiji River and a network of lakes such as Siwandu, Manze, Nzelekela, and Tagalala, it serves as a vast sanctuary that powerfully conveys the expanse of the African wild. These waterways create stunning landscapes and define the Nyerere/Selous experience, a unique African safari option, with game drives along the banks and boat safaris on the river or across the interconnected lakes.
A birdwatcher‘s paradise, this park has significant populations of elephants, buffaloes, and lions, as well as quite some leopards. Hyena, giraffe, zebra, eland, Coke’s hartebeest, waterbuck, and wildebeest are all present in healthy numbers in the park, and hippos and crocodiles are abundant in the permanent waterways. However, the region is most renowned for its substantial African wild dog population, which may be one of the largest on the continent.
With a limited number of visitors, the park offers an exclusive experience that deepens the connection with nature.
Vast, remote and wild, it is a dramatic and thrilling contrast to the more familiar Tanzanian parks in nearly every aspect.
