Lake Tanganyika

Presentation

Lake Tanganyika is the longest lake in the world (720 km) and the second deepest after Lake Baikal. Lake Tanganyika is located in the far west of Tanzania, on the African Great Rift, and makes up the entire border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It is the source of many African cichlids that can be seen in freshwater aquariums, offering an exceptional dive. Lake Tanganyika is located in the far west of Tanzania, and it makes up the entire border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Lake Tanganyika is a little-visited place by tourists, making it even more of a paradise.

It is considered a meeting place between North, East, West and South Africa, a kaleidoscope of culture, landscapes and nature. The lake shore dwellers make a living through fishing and have preserved their traditional way of life, with a respect for the lake’s spirit always present.

Considered a unique biological habitat on earth, Lake Tanganyika is also remarkable because of its balance and antiquity. Most of the shoreline consists of steep cliffs that drop directly into the lake, with cliffs and pristine beaches.

Lake Tanganyika is remarkable for its marine diversity, with over 2,000 species of plants and animals, with 600 being endemic. Its temperature remains constant at 23° all year round. African cichlids, which differ in size, shape, color, or behavior, are one of the lake’s evolutionary wonders. There are over 300 species, interesting for fish enthusiasts. Scuba diving or snorkeling is therefore highly recommended.

One can also fish with the local villagers or by kayaking, or just from the beach.

Quads and kayaks are also available for exploring the lake shore and villages, while a wellness center offers various massages.

The rainy season generally extends from November to March/April, but temperatures remain between 24° and 32° all year round. It is advised to wear a light jacket for beach dinners when the temperature drops in the evening.

Outside Mahale National Park or Gombe National Park, the best place to stay and enjoy Lake Tanganyika is with no doubt Lake Shore Lodge. We’ll be happy to tell you more about this magical place. Feel free to contact us.
